The big ones — 156 to 176 tiles, up to four layers deep, on three shapes: Tower, Fortress and Citadel. Set aside some time.

Tower rises off a stepped base so its upper tiles stay locked until you dismantle the foundation. Fortress and Citadel wrap battlements around hollow courtyards, which means most of the board is blocked on both sides for most of the game.

Every board can be cleared — and that is proven, not hoped

Most mahjong apps deal tiles at random, which is why so many boards turn out to be impossible. These are built backwards: pairs are lifted off an empty layout in a legal order, and that order is kept as a working solution. Every board was replayed at build time to confirm it, then cleared again by an automated player driving the game's real controls.

Being clearable does not mean being easy. On boards this size a careless opening will strand you, and that is the point. Shuffle re-deals the remaining tiles into a solvable arrangement rather than just scrambling them.
