Black Card Confidential: The Million-Dollar Alibi

SABLE CITY DOES NOT SLEEP. IT CHANGES CLOTHES.

And at 12:10 in the morning, on a mezzanine above a lounge with no sign on the door, a woman on the floor below looks up at Naomi Cross and holds her eyes one second too long.

Forty minutes later that woman is dead in Suite 1703 of the Crown Meridian, in a room booked under the name of the most famous athlete in the city — and Naomi Cross is the only person alive who can prove he wasn't the one who opened the door.

Eden Shaw left three things behind. A black membership card she was never supposed to have. A recording set to publish itself if she stopped checking in. And a question nobody in Sable City wants answered: who paid a million dollars two years ago to make a woman stop talking?

Naomi has spent fifteen years cleaning up other people's nights. She is the call you make at one in the morning, and she has never once mistaken that for being trusted.

This one has her name on it.

A novel about who gets believed, who gets paid, and what a receipt is worth twenty-seven years after the fire.

A hotel with a floor that isn't on the panel. A bishop nobody has ever asked a hard question in public. A councilwoman selling four blocks of Mercy Avenue to people who already own them. A sealed 1999 arson file with her own mother's signature on the last page. And a man in a gray suit who has been arranging Naomi Cross since she was nineteen years old and does not think of it as a crime.
